Hush Puppies Shoes
Hush Puppies was formed in 1958 and became famous for revolutionising modern leisure footwear launching when an American tannery called Wolverine made a pair of suede casual shoes from local American leather.
The Hush Puppy shoes came about when tannery workers said that his friend's dogs were hushed when they were fed corn balls, which at the time were known as "Hush Puppies", these snack were routinely given to the dogs after that to keep them quiet! At roughly the same time if you had sore feet, they were known as "Barking Dogs" in the US. The implication being that if you fed them they would shut up! The brand came to the UK a year later and were introduced in to the market by Saxone shoes and they became an instant success.
The footwear was stylish and also comfortable, they became firm favourites right through the 1950s -becoming the shoes of choice for the developing Mod movement through the 1960s. By 1965 Hush Puppy's range was huge in the leisure shoe market in America. Their success grew as the loafer market re-emerged in the mid 1990's when "vintage" started to become fashionable. The look grew on the British catwalk making an appearance in John Bartlett's collection. He sold them in a wide selection of funky colours from burgundy to lime made from super soft suede.
The fashionistas went bananas and the brand was cool again. Paul Smith in the UK was a champion of the Original look and he was the first to sell the new range of colours. They were soon picked up by fashions elite such as David Bowie, Mick Jagger and the Gallagher brothers. The brand is now owned by the huige Wolverine corporation who also own, Merrell, Sebago, and have the license for Caterpillar. The brand now focuses on building wide ranges of quality comfort shoes for men, women and children and have become of firm UK favourite. In 2012 the brand started working with Wayne Hemingway on a collaboration that would bring new hybrid styles to the market.
The range is firmly British with references ranges from the Mod era Quadrophenia, (Check the Bellby shoe!) to Brothel Creeper styles and Skins. The 'Hemingway fo Hush' range is available exclusively from their website and certain boutiques. The 50th anniversary was celebrated in 2008 and the range of shoes, boots and sandals ensure that they are the most wearables shoes in the market today. Hopefully they will here for another 50 years!
