Rockport Shoes - shopping, history and information on this iconic footwear brand
Its hard to believe but Rockport was only founded in 1971 - An American company born and bred they started with a simple philosophy which was to make the ultimate in comfortable shoes. The company was founded by father and son team Saul and Bruce Katz who initially started selling the shoes out of the back of their van - not an uncommon occurance in the business of selling footwear o independent shops!
They claim to be the first company to use advanced technologies to create comfortable footwear but of course the likes or Rieker and Rohde were already doing this in Germany in the 1930's and Clarks in the UK long before that. What is unique about the brand today however is the utilisation of mother company Adidas's sports technology in the construction of the footwear. The brand uses their 'Adiprene' comfort walking system and I can guarantee that when you put on a pair of Rockport shoes you will not want to tak them off! that's a promise. Anyway more about the brand!
The company was operated from its base in Canton Massacheusetts in America. After running it successfully Katz sold out to Reebock in 1985 - not a lot of people know this but Reebock was an English company based in Holcombe Brook a small village on the outskirts of Bolton - set up in 1890 by a Joseph Foster. After being bought out by Pentland in the early 1980's this company was swallowed up by the mighty Adidas group in 2006 and both compnaies are now owned by the group.
Rockport moved all of its production overseas during the 200's and now no pairs are still made in the US, most coming from China, some in India and others from Mexico depending on the design and construction of the shoe. All feture the adiPRENE shock absorber technology.
In 1990 the Vice President of the company Tony Post actually ran the New York marathon wearing a pair of Rockport Dress Sport shoes to prove the shoe's amazing support and shock absorption. See short video below!
The company really pushed the boat out in 1993 when a team of climbers wore a pair of the now iconic performance boots Unbwe Trail when scaling Mount Kilimanjaro, Africa's highest peak at 19,341 feet. Quite an acheivement!
In 1994 the company's advanced nautical footwear was worn in the Whitbread round the world Yacht Race and the Volvo Ocean Race - proving its pedigree in world class performance sports gear.
In 2009 they're at it again! and eight runners compete in the New York Maranton wearing the newly updated Dress Sport shoes!
Today the brand is an international success selling in over 66 countries worlwide. They develop a full collection of shoes, boots and sandals for men and women and they do it well!
