Hush Puppies Shoes - Men
It was 1958 when Hush Puppies was started. Famous for revolutionising modern casual footwear, they launched into the shoe market when American tannery, Wolverine created a suede pair of oxford shoes made from a local US leather.Hush Puppies' name was coined when one of the employees at the tannery said that his mates dogs were quietened when they were given corn balls which at th etime were known as Hush Puppies were given to them. Ayt around the same time sore feet were coommonly known as Barking Dogs - The idea was that those dogs could be calmed by putting on Hush Puppies, the analogy was started and stuck!.
The brand came over to the UK one year later and was launched by Saxone shoes, (which is now part of Barratts), they became an instant success. They were both stylish and comfortable and were favourites right through the 50s - In the UK they became the footwear of choice for respectable Mods right through the 60s. By '65, Hush Puppies shoes completely dominated the leisure shoe market in the US.
Hush Puppies grew up as the market for loafers and lace up shoes came round again - there was a huge market in the mid 90s as people sought out second hand hush puppies which really was the first time that 'vintage' became trendy. The look gathered pace on the UK catwalks appearing in the '95 collection of John Bartlett's He launched them in a selection of colours ranging from lime to lavender and made in supersodt suede. The fashion world went mad and suddenly the brand was hot property again.
In the UK Paul Smith was a great champion of the Hush Puppies Originals look and was the first to stock the new myriad of colours. They were subsequently picked up by the fashion elite which saw Bowie, Jagger and Noel Gallagher from Oasis picking up on the look.
Since then the brand, after a period of autonomy has been brough back in to the main stable of Wolverine brands, which also includes Sebago, Caterpillar and Merrell. Hush puppies now produces top quality mid market fashion for both men and women. They celebrated their 50th anniversary in 2008 and their width and selection of shoes, boots and sandales make them the most wearable and accessible shoes on the market ensuring that Hush Puppies will be around in another 50 years.
