Gola was launched in 1905, no one is quite sure where the name came from but it could have simply been an anagram of Goal. The company has had a long and chequered history going through many ups and downs over the years. Gola Sport used to make Football boots and indeed one of the first advertsiing campaigns for Gola was for the 1930 world cup using the slogan, 'Gola means Goals'
During the war years the Gola Shoes factory was given over to the manufacture of army boots, pumping out thousands of pairs of utility wear right up until the end of the war. The company continued its focus on Rugby and Football boots and was instrumental in the development of the first of the modern type of lighweight models. Gola sponsored phsio's at Football matches making full use of the advertising space on their bags during televised matches!
Gola made footie boots for many of the top teams of the day including Bill Shankley's Liverpool who visited the factory on the way to the 1966 FA cup final. Apparently the team had signed up to Adidas but ended up paling the match with Gola's which they had customised with three painted on white stripes!
Druing the late 60's the boots got lighter and Gola Classics led the way. In 1968 the Harrier 'Trainer' was introduced and became the footwear of choice gor the growing denim generation. The word 'Trainer' entered the dictionary in 1977 having been coined by Gola.
Moving swiftly forward to the mid 90' Gola went all retro and was reborn under a new owner who relaunched the Gola Classics brand. The footwear was worn by the great and the good of the day including Noel Gallagher of Oasis. The classics line was extended in 2000 when the company brought out lots of coloured up versions of its old classics.
In 2005 Gol;a celebrated 100 years in teh business and the ranges got bigegr and better with brilliant advertsing pushing the message home. In 2008 it was the 40th anniversary of the Classic Harrier shoe which was once again put to the market in a variety of splash colours!
It has now been produsced in over 200 colour combinations!
In 2009 Gola Trainers continued to Innovate with a collaboration with Cristian Lacroix to develop the eBoy basketball boot.
Today Gola contine to innovate with new models fresh designs and tasy advertising to go with it - Gola Classics Shoes, Fashion with a twist!
