The humble Wellington boot, about as British as u can get and a bit boring. Right? Mention it to most people and images of farmers fields, Labradors, waxed jackets and Volvo estates will no doubt appear. Not very sexy, or is it? Over the past couple of years Wellington boots have become the most adored and must have accessory for summer lovin’. With help of the rising English traditions such as Camping (or as us girls at Shoes.co.uk do it ‘Glamping’) and the summer music festival, now as much a part of the summer calendar as Wimbledon and trips to the sea side.
With over 20 festivals taking place each summer there is something for everyone. Whether it be our favourite’s, T in the park (8th July), Reading and Leeds Festival (26th August), Download (8th June) or the mother of all festivals Glastonbury(22nd June)
However, festivals alone are not the reason for the resurrection of the Wellington. Festival fashion has almost become as important as the music itself. There is one image to me that stands out and epitomizes festival chic and Glastonbury glamour and it changed the game. The image is of a certain super model by the name of Kate moss. Strolling hand in hand through the muddy crowds with her bad boy rock boyfriend Mr Peter Doherty. Kate, dressed in a black waistcoat, tiny shorts and low slung belt and wait for it, a pair of Hunters Wellies. She looked effortlessly stunning, uber cool, and totally rock and roll sexy. There have been pretenders to the crown, Siena miller, Alexa Chung and Daisy Lowe, to name a few but to me Kate Moss sums up festival chic and single handedly made wellies cool again. Originally popularised in the 19th century by the 1st duke of Wellington (hence the name) they became emulated by the fashionable British aristocracy of the time and a favourite amongst dandies such as Beau Brummell, creator of the modern suit. Fast forward several decades and the advent of world war one saw the need for a boot suitable for the trenches, the north British rubber company (now Hunter boot co) developed and produced almost 2 million pairs. Moving forward again the boot became used more for health and safety in areas where protection was required. Which brings us full circle back to the modern day. There are now hundreds of styles to choose from including our favourite boots with wedge heels, Croc print, red, black patent and cerise print.
So, get the look with our fabulous new range of wedge wellys and get organising your next camping trip!
